Virgin Trafficking in Columbia

A March 19 article in The Daily Beast outlines the tremendous surge in the sex trafficking of virgin girls as young as 10 years old in the Columbian city of Medellin. The “sale” of virgins for residents and, increasingly, wealthy tourists finds its roots in the reign of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who often recruited poor young girls in the 1980s for orgies involving drug traffickers at his home, the article says. Escobar often killed the girls afterward. A Medellin-based NGO, Consult Center for Urban Conflict (C3), now reports that the trafficking of virgin girls is less about cartels and gangs and more about wealthy tourists. Gangs, called combos, will threaten parents of girls typically aged 10-15 who don’t let them “sell” their daughters’ virginity to tourists. Those parents who willingly consent to selling their children often receive a “few hundred dollars, often equivalent to their entire monthly income,” The Daily Beast reports. Traumatized young girls and their families typically don’t go to police out of fear of reprisals. The secrecy also virtually ensures that the girls don’t receive physical and psychological care. –“The Pablo Escobar Legacy: Virgin Auctions in Medellin,” The Daily Beast, 3/19/16
